Bethlehem Church of Christ was established September 18,1949 by Elder Ward Glover. In 1958 Bishop Matthew Richardson (who also owned and directed a children’s nursery in the community) began pastoring Bethlehem. Under his leadership, the church purchased the Wesley Methodist Church at 1550 N. Fair Oaks, Pasadena, CA. Bishop understood the connection between systemic injustice and his faith – aware that many blacks who were displaced from building the 210 freeway did not have just compensation for their homes. The church worked closely with Dr. John Perkins with the Harambee ministry (a ministry that encourages, supports, and empower youths and their families through the power of education, leadership, and discipleship).
Since Bishop’s pastorship, Bethlehem has been pastored by five elders and two interim Pastors. The Church continues to win souls for Christ by sharing the gospel door-to-door, Sunday evening radio broadcasting, and visiting convalescent homes.
Property surrounding the Church was purchased. The church moved six apartments onto the property and rents them using section 8 vouchers Two apartments in the back were utilized for the “House of Hope” ministry (a program housing homeless teenagers – offering case management and family reunification support). The Church has used its facilities for community outreach, free breakfast and clothes giveaway; creating job opportunities by hosting the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Job Fair, Career and College Day as well as Medical Fairs.
